The coming of summer has brought school vacations, and in response the Shanghai Youdao Public Welfare Service Center has joined hands with the neighborhood committees of Wanwan, Fengpu and Wuju to create a unique “Colorful Summer, Guarding the Children’s Hearts of Shanghai” series of activities for the children who live in them.
Activities kicked off in early July 2024 and will last until the end of August. The aim is to stimulate children’s creativity, imagination and hands-on abilities through a variety of courses and activities, to help them keep up their learning and their love of life during the holidays.
Many children in the communities have walked into an ocean of fun and knowledge, full of curiosity and expectations about unknown worlds.
Programming class: Learning and creativity
In the programming class, children learned the basics of programming under the guidance of teachers from the Huacao Stepping Stones Youth Development Center in Shanghai’s Minhang District. Hands-on learning helped them develop their logical thinking and innovation abilities. Looking at the small games and programs they wrote, the children’s faces were filled with confidence and joy.
Painting class: Describe beauty and let your dreams fly
In the painting classes, children worked their brushes to depict the beautiful worlds in their hearts. Under the patient guidance of volunteer teacher Li Jiaying, each work was full of rich imagination and creativity.
Calligraphy class: Inheriting culture and caring for it
In the calligraphy class, the children listened carefully to volunteer teacher Li Jiaying’s explanation of the art and practiced writing with a brush stroke by stroke. Learning calligraphy exposed the children to the charm of China’s traditional culture and its fine aesthetic taste.
Twisted stick flower art class: Describing life with your hands
In the Twisted Stick Flower Arranging Class, the children met colorful twisty sticks and turned them into beautiful flowers.
Paper-cutting class: Cutting out the wonders of folk art
In the paper-cutting class children learned how to make a variety of charming and very special items of their very own
Reading class: Savor the books and enlighten your mind
In the reading class, volunteer teacher Ying Manwen guided the children to read quietly, and helped them to feel the charm of literature and cultivate good reading habits.
During the activities, the children not only gained knowledge and skills, but also learned sharing, cooperation and understanding through teamwork and interactive communication. Their smiles and their growth became for us the most beautiful scenes of the summer.
